I have been reading about open innovation, open source, crowdsourcing during these days. These definitions share some territories, but usually, when their applications are analyzed from the companies perspectives there is a prevalent strategy: open and sourcing are employed as outside-in approaches rather than inside-out approaches. This means that knowledge acquisition from outside is embodied in the companies’ philosophy, and then transformed into products and services. Revenues remain internal, not open.
I did not read much about the other way around. Well, yesterday Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO surprised me. All Tesla’s patents are now open source.
